Midrand Tech Store

A Midrand electronics store needed a better way to let customers compare products, read key specs and still keep high value stock secure on the floor. iTouch 360 supplied comparison kiosks and secure display solutions that suited the store layout, trading hours and day to day retail pressure.

Midrand Tech Store

The brief from a busy Midrand floor

The store serves office buyers, gamers, home users and small business owners, so the team needed a setup that could explain products quickly without slowing down the sales counter. The brief was simple enough on paper: make comparisons easier, keep items safe and reduce the time staff spent repeating the same product details all day.

Like many Midrand retail sites, the branch had a steady mix of walk in traffic and planned purchases from nearby businesses. The client wanted something that could handle daily use, stay presentable and fit a modern electronics environment without taking over the floor. They also needed the system to remain practical during load-shedding and short network interruptions, because the store cant afford long downtime when trade is busy.

  • Help shoppers compare similar models side by side
  • Protect display stock from handling and walk offs
  • Keep the footprint small enough for a retail aisle
  • Match the store's clean, technical look

Site limits, power and security requirements

Before we proposed anything, we assessed the sales floor, power points, cable routes and the available space around the category bays. The store had a fairly tight layout, with limited room near the entrance and a need to keep the main pathway open for foot traffic. That meant the hardware had to be compact, wall aware and easy to service without disrupting trading.

Security was another major point. The client wanted product display solutions that would allow touch and viewing access while limiting physical removal of stock. We also worked around the reality of municipal and building rules in a retail centre environment, including safe cable runs, tidy mounting and clear access for maintenance staff. In Midrand, where humidity is generally manageable but dust and daily handling still matter, we selected components that could stand up to constant public use.

  • Restricted floor space near the main category wall
  • Need for tidy power and data routing
  • Public access with controlled product handling
  • Low disruption installation after trading hours

Comparison kiosks built for retail questions

We supplied interactive touchscreen comparison kiosks that let shoppers review product features, prices and key use cases in one place. The screens were sized for standing use at the sales floor, with a layout that made it easy to compare two or more items without asking staff for every detail. That freed the team to focus on closing sales and assisting customers who were ready to buy.

Each kiosk was configured for straightforward use. The interface was kept simple, with clear category menus, large touch targets and quick access to the most asked-about product information. We loaded the agreed content, checked the button flow and made sure the store team could update entries without confusion. The hardware was installed with secure mounting, internal cable management and protection suited to a public retail setting.

  • Touchscreen format for fast product comparison
  • Large on screen controls for easy use by first time shoppers
  • Secure mounting and concealed cabling
  • Content loading for the store's core product ranges

Secure display units for high value stock

Alongside the kiosks, we supplied secure product display solutions for the items that needed customer access but not free handling. These units gave the store a better balance between visibility and protection. Shoppers could inspect the products, while staff kept control of the stock and packaging.

The display solution was selected to suit compact electronics, accessories and premium devices. It was important that the units stayed visually light, so the store would not look crowded, but still delivered the security and support needed for daily retail use. We also made sure the display surfaces and fittings would cope with repeated customer interaction. In a busy store, that means fewer wear points and fewer calls for small repairs.

  • Controlled access to high value items
  • Clear product visibility from the aisle
  • Durable fittings for repeated use
  • Practical for accessories and premium devices

Delivery, installation and staff handover

The project ran over three weeks from site assessment to final handover. Week one covered the walk through, measurements and final solution design. Week two included preparation, content loading and configuration. Week three was installation, testing and staff training before the store resumed normal trading with the new setup.

Our installation team worked around the client's operating hours and kept disruption to a minimum. Once the units were in place, we tested touch response, viewing angles, cable security and day to day usability. We then trained the team on basic content use, simple fault checks and what to log for support. Lerato Khumalo handled the operations flow, Johan van Wyk oversaw the technical checks, and Thabo Molefe coordinated the install on site.

  • Three week delivery from survey to handover
  • After hours installation where needed
  • Testing of screens, mounts and connections
  • Staff training included with the handover

What changed on the sales floor

After the install, the store had a clearer way to guide shoppers through product choices. Customers could compare key specifications without waiting for repeated explanations, which reduced pressure on the floor team during busy periods. The secure display points also made the stock area feel calmer and better controlled, especially around premium items that often need closer supervision.

The client also saw a more organised in store flow. People spent longer at the right category bay, and staff could move conversations forward faster because the comparison information was already in front of the customer. That matters in electronics retail, where price, features and compatibility often decide the sale. The final result was a practical sales environment that looked sharper and worked harder day to day.

For future rollouts, we would keep the same approach: a short site assessment, a tight content structure and secure mounting matched to the actual floor plan. That combination worked well here and would suit other Midrand and Gauteng tech stores with similar space limits and product mix.

What we would repeat on the next rollout

If we were doing another electronics store in Johannesburg, Pretoria or Cape Town, we would use the same method: assess the customer journey first, then match the hardware to the retail floor rather than forcing a one size setup. That keeps the solution practical, easier to support and better suited to the way South African stores trade, especially when power cuts or weekend rushes put extra strain on staff.

We would also keep the support plan simple. Clear content loading, basic training and preventative servicing go a long way in retail, and they reduce avoidable downtime. For a branch that trades daily and handles expensive stock, that kind of discipline is worth more than fancy features that are never used.

Questions we get asked

Can comparison kiosks work in a busy retail store?

Yes. They are well suited to busy floors because shoppers can check features and compare options without waiting for a staff member each time.

How long did the Midrand project take?

The project took three weeks from the first site assessment to final installation, testing and staff handover.

Can secure product displays be used for high value electronics?

Yes. They are useful where the store needs visibility for customers but still wants controlled access and better stock security.
